Dear Friend, Today is Nakba Day. The day we Palestinians commemorate the catastrophe which began in 1948 when 700,000 of us were violently displaced from our lands. As a survivor of this tragedy, I commemorate the Nakba every day. The Nakba continues to today as the Israeli government, with the aid of the United States government and its European allies continue to act with impunity in carrying out a slow genocide of my people. I resist by taking part in a campaign of truth telling and advocacy. I do this personally and as I join groups such as FOSNA who are dedicated to working for a just peace. To me a just peace means my ability to exercise my right of return to the country of my birth, Palestine; compensation for the loss of our properties and loss of their use and enjoyment for the past 72 years; and equal rights of Palestinians whether living in Gaza, Jerusalem, West Bank and Israel. Now in the twilight of my life, it is difficult to see how I can live my dream of return to my home and the warm embrace of my Palestinian community so horribly torn apart. But I can hope that future generations of Palestinians can live with full human and civil rights in their own land and through truth and reconciliation live in peace with Israelis. I look forward to FOSNA’s commemoration tomorrow with a new generation of Nakba survivors. Please join us for "Commemorate by Resisting: The Nakba and Indigenous Struggles." Sincerely,
Nahida Halaby Gordon, PhD Board of Trustees Friends of Sabeel North America
